Northstar Technical Inc. is a marine technology company that specializes in underwater communications systems and contract manufacturing. Northstar's expertise is built on a decade of research, development, and manufacturing of electronic components, transducer technologies, and SONAR technologies, forming the core of the acoustic communications systems designed for use in the harshest marine environments on Earth.
Northstar has emerged as an aggressive leader in wireless trawl performance monitoring for the commercial fishery. Northstar's NETMIND™ family of products allows fisherpeople to optimize their catch while minimizing by-catch and reducing the environmental impact of their trawling activities. The same products are being used by research organizations around the world to collect scientific data about trawl performance and the environmental impact of fishing activities. Revenues from NETMIND™ sales are currently fuelling the growth of the company.
The contract manufacturing division of Northstar Technical sustains a fierce pace, alternating between its contract manufacturing activities and NETMIND™ system production. Northstar has manufactured SONAR based intruder detection systems and submarine control consoles for the homeland security and military defense sectors. Northstar has proven its reliability and marine engineering expertise as a manufacturing sub-contractor for Lockheed-Martin. This relationship has led to Northstar signing a manufacturing license agreement with Lockheed Martin that enables the company to produce submarine control consoles for Lockheed Martin's international clientele.
Much of Northstar’s growth over the years has been fuelled by its research and development division. In 2003 Northstar secured CDN$3.6 million in funding to launch an aggressive research and development program to develop its proven transducer and SONAR technologies into new products and enabling technologies. These technologies will be modular components that will enable Northstar to rapidly customize its technologies for use in many marine industries like offshore petroleum, underwater mining, defense, fishing, oceanography, environmental and marine transportation industries.
